The El Paso Museum of History is now open. Bring the entire family to experience more than 400 years of regional history. Admission to the Museum is free.
The El Paso Museum of History began as the Cavalry Museum in 1974. In 1980 the name was changed to the El Paso Museum of History. Thanks to a bond issue El Paso citizens passed in 2000, a new museum has been built in the heart of downtown El Paso.

The El Paso Museum of History is proud to showcase more than 120 hand-held fans from the Museum’s permanent collection of 350 fans. The fans on display date as far back as 1750 with many from the late 19th century. They were gifted to the Museum by Mrs. W.R. Brown. Mrs. Brown, or Kate Moore Brown as she was known to her friends, was a strong supporter of the arts. She collected fans from her worldwide travels. Entrance to the exhibit is free. El Paso Aviation
At the El Paso Museum of History March 15 – September 6, 2009
In cooperation with the El Paso International Airport and NASA, the El Paso Museum of History will host “El Paso Aviation.” Included in the exhibit is an authentic T-38 Talon supersonic jet. It has been disassembled at the NASA facility in El Paso and reassembled inside the Museum of History. Prior to this, the T-38 had been modified to train Space Shuttle pilots and commanders. Also included in the exhibit is a picnic table signed by these same astronauts, airport runway lights, a runway beacon, and historical photos and documents. On Tuesday, March 24 at 3 pm, four-time astronaut Steve Nagel will be at the Museum. Free.
NASA Astronaut to Speak at El Paso Museum of History
Four-time Space Shuttle astronaut Steve Nagel will make a brief appearance at the El Paso Museum of History Tuesday, March 24 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the Museum’s newest exhibit, El Paso Aviation, which officially opens March 15. Steve Nagel was born October 27, 1946, in Canton, Illinois. His hobbies include sport flying and astronomy. He received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering (high honors) from the University of Illinois in 1969, and a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from California State University, Fresno, California, in 1978.
El Paso Aviation includes an authentic T-38 supersonic jet, installed in the Museum’s temporary gallery and an array of fascinating avionic artifacts on loan from the El Paso International Airport and NASA. El Paso Aviation is possible with the cooperation from many partners within the El Paso community.

Call for Submissions DEADLINE EXTENDED
Celebrate Our Heritage
The City of El Paso’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD) is pleased to announce a call for submissions to military students in 5th – 12th
grade. Students are asked to submit essays accompanied by either a photo or artwork about their culture.

Twenty-five winners will be selected from the submissions to participate in an exhibit to be hosted April—May 2009 at the El Paso Museum of History.
The project is part of the “Celebrate Our Heritage” program funded in part by a grant received from the Southern Poverty Law Center. The intent of the
program is to engage military families to talk about the traditions they bring with them in an effort to educate lifelong El Paso residents about the
diversity of our community.
Recognizing the contributions that Ft. Bliss families bring to the community, the program goes beyond the typical cultural/festival celebrations by
educating our community about these contributions that help build El Paso.
Deadline HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO APRIL 15, 2009 by 5:00 p.m. Submissions must be delivered to the Museum of History located at 510 N. Santa Fe (2nd floor). Applications must accompany every submission.

A Step in Time
The El Paso Museum of History opens its long-awaited store, A Step in Time. The store is chocked full of nifty historic do-dads, gidgets and gadgets, books, posters, jewelry, coffee mugs, and the like. Everything is very affordable and very unique. We encourage you to stop by and say hello.

Senior Education Curator comes on board
The El Paso Museum of History is pleased to welcome Susan Taylor. Susan holds a Masters of Education with her major in Museum Education from the College of William & Mary, and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Florida State University.
Susan has been an interpreter for the National Park Service Training in New York and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia. In addition, Susan worked as the Education Officer & Conservation Technician for the Jamestown/Yorktown Foundation and Education Interpreter and Collections Manager for St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum in Florida. She relocated to the Southwest and was employed by the Bureau of Land Management Empire Ranch in the position of Interpreter in Tucson, Arizona, and later began working for the Environmental Education Ranger for the Navajo State Park in Arboles, Colorado. Prior to coming to El Paso, Susan worked for the National Atomic Museum in the position of Outreach Educator.

The Museum Draws Closer to Matching the City Council’s $100,000 Matching Grant Challenge for the 3rd Permanent Gallery, Las Villitas
A tremendous challenge has been placed on the Museum of History table; raising $100,000 to meet a Challenge Grant offered by the El Paso City Council last year. Thus far nearly $75,000 has been raised primarily through grant and individual contributions. Thank you everyone!
