RECOGNITION:
Earth Hour
“16TH ANNUAL BEEMS CONFERENCE: LEADING FOR THE FUTURE: PROMOTING MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN”
| WHEREAS: |
The city of El Paso is proud to be hosting the 16th Annual BEEMS Conference “Leading for the Future: Promoting Multilingual Education for All Children” co-sponsored by UTEP’s College of Education, the Canutillo Independent School District and Ysleta Independent School District; and |

| WHEREAS: |
These products, when not used as intended, may be hazardous, particularly if children gain access to them; and |
| | |
| WHEREAS: |
The city of El Paso is the home of exemplary bilingual programs, including one-way dual language programs; and |
| | |
| WHEREAS: |
In our complex, rapidly changing world, bilingual/bicultural, multicultural/multilingual education is recognized as vital to our nation’s continued growth and prosperity; and |
| | |
| WHEREAS: |
A group of distinguished keynote speakers and presenters will address conference participants and speak to such issues as the pedagogical practices in bilingual education, educational reform, parents as partners and technology in bilingual education; and |
| | |
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Mayor and Council of the City of El Paso, that 26th-28th, 2009 shall be known as:
“16TH ANNUAL BEEMS CONFERENCE: LEADING FOR THE FUTURE: PROMOTING MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN”
“GIRL SCOUT WEEK”
| WHEREAS: |
March 12th, 2009 marks the 97th Anniversary of Girl Scouts USA, founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia; and |

| WHEREAS: |
More than 3 million current Girl Scout members nationwide will be celebrating this American tradition, with nearly 50 million women who are former Girl Scouts and living proof of the impact of this amazing movement; and |

| WHEREAS: |
Throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouts of the Rio Grande has inspired a diverse membership of more than 5,500 girls and 2,300 adults over a 25,000 square mile, eight-county region of West Texas and Southern New Mexico with the highest ideals of courage, confidence, and character; and |
| | |
| WHEREAS: |
Through Girl Scouting’s unique leadership development program, girls define leadership by discovering, connecting, and taking action in their communities to make the world a better place; and |
| | |
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED: by the Mayor and Council of the City of El Paso, that Friday, March 12th, 2009 shall be known as:
“GIRL SCOUT WEEK”
“BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF EL PASO WEEK”
| WHEREAS: |
The year 2009 marks the 80th anniversary of Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso, founded as the Goodwill Boys’ Club in early 1929, and officially chartered on August 19th , 1929 by Boys Clubs of America; and |

| WHEREAS: |
Boys and Girls Clubs of El Paso now serves over 1,400 youth and their families through three Clubs as part of a national movement serving 4.8 million young people through some 4,300 Clubs; and |
| | |
| WHEREAS: |
Through the “Club” experience, boys and girls in El Paso develop character and leadership skills, explore education and career options, learn about health and life skills, participate in the arts and sports, fitness and recreation; and |
| | |
| WHEREAS: |
The Boys & Girls Clubs remain committed to “enabling all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens”; and |
| | |
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Mayor and Council of the City of El Paso, that the month of March 23rd, 2009 shall be known as:
“BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF EL PASO WEEK”
